Introduction
In July of 2013 I attended a two hour class on the use of the new Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pump. A PCA pump infuses pain medication and the patient can control when doses of pain medication are given by pressing a button. I was one of three Pulmonary Unit staff members that volunteered to train all the Pulmonary Unit nurses on the set up and use of this new device. The education would take place during the month of August, 2013 and the new pumps would go into service in the beginning of September, 2013.
Training
I would discuss the set up and operation of the pump with small groups. The staff would individually set up the pump and operate it. They would also explore all the features of the pump. I would provide sample medications and physician orders for each staff member to go through all the motions as they would if the pump was to be hooked up to an actual patient. I critiqued their performance and answered all their questions. We worked together until each staff member felt comfortable with the set up and programming of the pump.
