The Structural Empowerment tab contains the Preceptor Certificate, the Teaching Activity, a second Teaching Activity, the Journal Club, and the CE Record. The Teaching Activity began in January of 2013 and concluded in August of 2013. The Teaching Activity was comprised of educating the Pulmonary Unit on the expectations of the Nursing Practice Guideline:
Independent Double Check of Medications. The education was also disseminated to the other Medical and Surgical areas of the hospital with a presentation to the Handoff Communication Champions Committee. The second Teaching Activity was performed during July and August of 2013. The training was for coworkers to become familiar with the new pain pump that would go into use the following month. The quest for a journal article began in May of 2013 and ended with the actual Journal Club taking place in August of 2013. The journal article provides the rationale for extending antibiotic infusions, which has been an area on contention for quite some time on the Pulmonary Unit. The nurses could not understand why the same antibiotic is infused over 30 minutes on one patient and the same medication is infused over 4 hours on another patient. The journal article clarifies the confusion. The CE Record is highlighted with the week long September, 2012 course: Healthcare Leadership for Mass Casualty Incidents.
