Introduction
I participated in a research study from August to December, 2012. The focus of the study was to determine how much time the nurse spends educating the patient and taking into consideration how much time is spent on other activities. My goal was to add a clinical perspective to the research project and collect raw data. The results of this study could lead to vast improvements in the way patients are educated when hospitalized.
Request to assist
In August of 2012 an email correspondence with Mary Krugman began. I was informed by my manager that Mary was doing an educational project on the Pulmonary and Orthopaedics Units. I met with Mary on September 4, 2012 to discuss the project. Below is the email discussion prior to the meeting.

We discussed the actual research article that the study was based on. Mary highlighted the goals of the research study and showed me the Motion Data Collection Tool that was still in the development stages. Below is journal article the research study is based on.
Hendrich, A., Chow, M., Skierczynski, B., & Lu, Z. (2008). A 36-Hospital Time and Motions Study: How Do Medical-Surgical Nurses Spend Their Time? The Permanente Journal. 12(3): 25-34. (LOE III)
Observation meeting
The following meeting was on September 17, 2012 where we discussed the best methods to observe the nurses with out being intrusive and considered that our mere presence could artificially increase the amount of patient education that was performed. I thought we should take the stance that we are merely documenting the amount of time the nurse takes to perform various duties and record those times under various categories of nursing workflows. We also developed a rating system of patient education based on expectations required to achieve each higher level. Below is a draft of the rating system.

Collection tool meetings
The next meeting was October 1, 2012 to focus on the Motion Data Collection Tool. We wanted to determine what barriers were present that would limit the amount of learning that occurred and discover the best methods to keep track of the time the nurse spent on all various activities and categorize these activities into groups. Below is the original tracking tool.

These legal sized forms contain all the necessary information for the study but pose a challenge when utilizing them for documentation. The main aspect of my contribution was to merely divide the time that education was not taking place into clinical activities like physician communication and nonclinical activities such as taking a break. Much time was spent on the data collection tool that took place on October 24, 2012. Below is the feedback I provided after trialing the tool.
Data collection
Another meeting took place on November 14, 2012 to finalize the tool and ensure we all were performing our observations from the exact same script. Mary stated that my clinical perspective was invaluable to the research project. Below is my first collection of data, with many more completed over the next several weeks.

My contributions to the research study
Below is an email from Mary that highlights my contributions to the research study. She identified that my insight and contributions during the team meetings to prepare for the data collection and revision the data collection tools were appreciated. She highlighted that I had made a difference and was valuable with assisting on the data collection.

Executive Summary
Below is the summary of the study with the baseline data. Please note that the Executive Summary document was not my creation. My contribution to this study was to provide a clinical perspective on the preparation for data collection, revising the data collection tool, and the actual collection of data. The Executive Summary is included to provide more insight on the scope of the entire research study.
